This is me..

My name is Heather Schlesinger and I am a junior at Sacramento State.  I am majoring in studio art with an emphasis in sculpture.  To be honest, I am not very "in tune" with blogging, media, and computers in general so bare with me.

I was a massage therapist for about 6 years.  After I had my daughter I thought about my life, what I wanted to truly do with it, and what kind of role model I wanted to be for my little girl so here I am, 28, single mom, trying to get through life just like the rest of the world.

I find the history of art extremely interesting and inspiring.  Particularly the feminism aspects of contemporary art.  As a woman who had housewife roles pushed onto me for a few years this really hits home.  I’ve also had people be discouraging and judgmental in the outside world saying things to me like, "You can't go to school, your going to be too busy raising that baby."

This drives me even further to prove them wrong as well as prove to myself that although at times I may be super overwhelmed, I can do it. And so can anyone else who is driven enough to follow their passions.

A common theme among the artists we have already been learning about in this Contemporary Art History class seems to be that they all follow their truth.  They strive to push limits, boundaries, and don’t care what the institution says about them. As an art student today in 2019 who has experienced some not so pleasant people who think, “you should be this, you should be that”, to them I say whatever dude and to those artists before us I say rock on and thanks for the inspiration!
